Rising Stronger: Lana Rogers on Resilience, Resetting and the Road Ahead

For Lana Rogers, surf lifesaving has never been just about podiums - they’re about purpose, passion and the people who shape the journey. As one of Australia’s most respected Ironwomen, Lana has faced the full spectrum of highs and setbacks that come with elite competition. In this conversation, she opens up about the moments that anchor her to the sport, the challenges that have shaped her resilience, and the mindset she’s taking into her next chapter. Honest, grounded and fiercely driven, Lana’s reflections remind us why athletes like her continue to inspire the next generation on and off the beach.
Can you share a moment during the race that reminded you why you love this sport?
It was when I won my very first major title. My first Australian Ironwoman title. I was struggling into the following season to find my feet because I felt pressure to perform. I took some time to find out why I enjoyed surf life saving and being an elite athlete. It was taking time and being out in the ocean that remained myself where that love came from and why I enjoyed racing.
What did you learn about yourself during this year’s Coolanagtta Gold event?
I learned that when you fall, you need to be strong enough to pick yourself back up again.
Were there any moments where you surprised yourself with what you could handle?
Mentally yes. For me, the chapter of the Coolanagtta Gold has closed for me. It’s not goodbye or a sad thing. It’s hello to new goals, new loves and new beginnings of this crazy sport we know and love.
How do you stay motivated and positive even when a race doesn’t go exactly as planned?
For me, it was finding a way to find that fire in the belly again. This is my tenth year heading into my professional series, so sometimes it’s hard to find that inner love, competitiveness, goals and strength. I have to go back to simple steps, simple ways to find out why I love the ocean again and why I love the hard work we do again.
Who or what gave you the most support during the event, and how did that make a difference?
I’m always surrounded by good people that do want the best for me. Even though I’m getting older, I still need guidance sometimes!
Looking back, what personal achievements or milestones from this race stand out to you?
Big one for me was winning my third Iron Series Title in the 23/24 season. Very special.
How will this experience shape your mindset and goals for the next challenge?
Like I said, sometimes you need to fall to pick yourself up again. (I'm) learning lots with the people that guide me and my next goal on the calendar is our Shaw and Partners Iron Series in Newcastle. Hopefully see you guys on the beach!
Lana’s story is a reminder that even at the highest level, progress isn’t linear - it’s built on resilience, support, and a genuine love for the ocean. As she resets her goals and looks ahead to the Shaw and Partners Iron Series, her mindset is clear: fall, rise, learn, repeat. It’s this commitment to growth that makes Lana not only an exceptional competitor, but a powerful role model for anyone chasing their own version of greatness. We can’t wait to see what she brings next.
